A practical introduction to the foundations of teaching voice.

Designed for new and developing singing teachers, this six-session programme provides a strong starting point for understanding the voice and structuring effective, responsive singing lessons.

Across the course, we explore how to structure a singing lesson; 

the basic science and anatomy of the voice; 

breath and support;

the larynx and vocal registers; recognising and responding to unnecessary tension; 

choosing and adapting vocal exercises; 

working practically through repertoire; emotional connection and communication; 

and the psychology of working with individual students.

The emphasis throughout is on translating knowledge into practical teaching. Understanding what you are hearing, what you might change, and the tools you can use to help a singer achieve it.

Designed for confident singers and practising singing teachers looking to develop and expand their skills. 

Building on the scientific and practical foundations established in Foundations of Teaching Singing, the focus shifts from understanding how the voice works to developing the skills to assess, analyse and respond to the individual singer.

We explore vocal technique in greater depth, including the relationship between voice and body; psychological and emotional influences; vocal health and demanding vocal loads; hormones, lifestyle and environmental factors; voice assessment and problem-solving; scope of practice and building a professional referral network.

Practical studio skills include musicianship and sight-reading, working with repertoire, exam preparation and contemporary vocal coordinations including belt and mix.

With a strong practical and reflective focus, teachers explore exercises, techniques and repertoire through their own instrument, while bringing experiences from their teaching into the sessions.

For practising teachers ready to deepen their knowledge, sharpen their assessment skills and develop greater confidence in their own approach.

An individual, practice-led mentorship for established singing teachers ready to take a deeper look at how they teach.

This highly personalised programme provides a confidential and supportive space to examine your teaching practice with an experienced outside eye. 

Sharpen your listening, question habitual approaches and develop greater confidence in the choices you make with individual singers.

Rather than following a fixed curriculum, the mentorship develops around you, your students and your practice. 

Together we explore real teaching situations through observation/ joint classes, case discussion and practical work, informed by current voice science and vocal pedagogy.

Particular attention is given to vocal health and habilitation, recognising potential problems, supporting healthy vocal load, injury prevention and understanding when referral or collaborative care may be appropriate.

Mentees may bring students into selected sessions for live observation and collaborative teaching, alongside maintaining a reflective teaching journal and undertaking guided reading throughout the programme.
